Better known for his work with DEVO, Mark Mothersbaugh has also been active in the visual arts since the formation of the musical group as an artistic project in the early 1970s. The installation Spin Chain the Gears* consisted of hand-painted ceramic figures, as well as music, intervened recordings, and references to square dancing. It reflected the artist’s long-standing interest in the relationship between the concepts of control and play.

* “Spin chain the gears” is a phrase used to indicate a change of step in square dancing.
