Armed Hand | Enrique Oroz

From May 11 to July 29, 2012

Enrique Oroz is one of the most refreshing, independent and provocative voices in contemporary Mexican painting. Although born in the state of Sonora, Oroz grew up and trained in Guadalajara, under the shelter of the tradition of Guadalajara painting, led by José Clemente Orozco.

A master of oil painting, with a preference for medium and large formats, the themes of his paintings revolve around sex, alcohol and the night; the religious iconography of Mexican churches and a peculiar fusion between pre-Hispanic elements and symbols and elements and symbols of today’s consumer society. Some critics have dubbed his style “trash pop.”
