“The omnipresence of this little-known painting was, to some extent, enigmatic. I wondered why, among all the available models, amateurs insisted on copying the work of a forgotten 19th-century master.
The seductive simplicity, and thus the ease of its reproduction, were not sufficient reasons to explain its power to multiply. I sensed a mutual ignorance: while professional painters drew inspiration from Marcel Duchamp, casual painters paraphrased Jean-Jacques Henner. Fabiola established a different criterion for what might constitute a masterpiece.”
