The Mark Bradford Residency at MAZ is a unique experience for thirty emerging artists, who want to create a path for their career and art practice. During this three-week residency, artists produce a mural at the Luis Barragán Gallery that will be part of Bradford’s coming exhibition at MAZ, and learn the techniques of his practice in a hands-on environment with conversations diving into key topics led by the artist.
The expenses covered by the Mark Bradford Residency program include artist stipends, meals, supplies, health insurance and technical support.
Mission
Museo de Arte de Zapopan, MAZ, develops its program in collaboration with Hauser & Wirth and Mark Bradford, aiming to encourage the development of local creatives from diverse backgrounds and disciplines in an early stage of their careers by providing an opportunity that fosters collaboration and the exchange of ideas alongside Mark Bradford, an international artist who has witnessed first-hand how a lack of educational and social resources can affect the communities.
Mural + Artist Talks
Under the guidance of Mark Bradford, who binds together layers of found and store-bought papers, the artists will physically interact with the work—sanding, tearing, bleaching, and weathering the surface, to reveal a mural relevant to the city of Guadalajara and its muralist tradition, and to the political climate of the United States.
Throughout Mark Bradford’s career, he has collected ‘merchant posters’ which are printed sheets advertising services and posted in neighborhoods. The topics advertised in the posters, such as debt relief, legal advice for immigrants and quick cash, will spark meaningful conversations between Bradford and the artists during the three-week production of the mural.
Portfolio review, Mentorship, and Letter of recommendation
The Residency program provides a platform for emerging artists to showcase their work, gain recognition, share experiences with peer-artists, and expand their professional network.
The artists will have the chance to present their work to Mark Bradford, enabling a space of conversation and feedback. During this event, Bradford will offer one-on-one commentary and share insights about each of the participant’s Portfolio.
