My Neighbours – Artur Zmijewski

El video My Neighbours (Mis vecinos) fue realizado en 2009 durante el curso de una residencia artística en Israel por invitación del Digital Art Lab en Jolón. La invasión israelí sobre la Franja de Gaza denominada “Operación Plomo Fundido” se llevó a cabo en ese periodo.
El palpable estado de tensión social causado por el conflicto armado a pocos kilómetros de distancia, la propaganda militar en los medios de comunicación y las manifestaciones callejeras a favor y en contra de la ofensiva a Gaza inspiraron al artista a visitar y entrevistar a los vecinos del edificio de apartamentos donde se alojaba, así como a otros residentes en el área inmediata, pidiéndoles su opinión sobre la guerra y testimonios sobre el aspecto de Gaza tras el prolongado ataque aéreo. Zmijewski y su equipo mantuvieron abundantes conversaciones con residentes de Jolón y Tel Aviv. Sus interlocutores respondieron utilizando palabras y dibujos. La opinión dominante fue “la guerra cambiará la situación de la gente en Gaza para bien”. Esta dura opinión prevalecía aún durante la operación militar israelí en el territorio de Gaza, llamada “Operación Pilar Defensivo”.

My Neighbours

The film “My Neighbours” (2009) arose during the artistʼs stay in Israel at the invitation of the Digital Art Lab in Holon. This was the time when the Israeli invasion of Gaza codenamed “Operation Cast Lead” was taking place.
The palpable state of social tension caused by the war going on a few dozen kilometres away, the military propaganda in the media and street demonstrations for and against the attack on Gaza inspired the artist to visit his neighbours in the tenement where he was staying, as well as those in the immediate area. He asked them for their opinion on the war and Gazaʼs appearance after prolonged rocket fire. Żmijewski and his crew held many conversations with residents of Holon and Tel Aviv. Their interlocutors responded using words and drawings. The dominant opinion was that “the war will change the circumstances of the people in Gaza for the better”. This harsh opinion was still being repeated when the Israeli army attacked Gaza, codenaming the attack “Pillar of Defence”.
